Being a two island nation Sao Tome and Principe is a great place for visitors. The people here are friendly and welcoming. Eco tourists are usually delighted on the island of Principe with its amazing expansive jungle, it is almost like a lost World. There are amazing beaches, snorkelling opportunities, great opportunities for birdwatching and even fishing. The end of colonial rule by the Portuguese in 1975 saw the country fall into economic collapse and many of the once splendid colonial buildings are now in a state of decay. There are some great hotels on the Island including the Roca Belo Monte hotel, it is situated high up on a hill with great views of the coastline.
There are a number of great attractions but none more popular than ‘The Bay of Spires’ this is located on Principe and is the absolute top attraction for the whole country. If time is limited for you, this attraction should be your number one choice.
Being an Island, the food here is excellent with a wonderful choice of fish as well as the very common octopus. One should try the delicious traditional ‘Calulú’ a delicious smoked fish and vegetable stew. Fruit is also plentiful here; pineapple, starfruit, mango and more are readily available and very fresh.
This is a very informal country and you will find the people charming. To get around the island the best mode of transport is a shared taxi, but it is advised that you pay for 2 seating places to make your journey more comfortable.
